November Nutrition with Remember When Homecare: Benefits of Vitamin C

Our November nutrition blog series would not be complete if we did not touch on the importance of Vitamin C. Vitamin C impacts everything from our immune health to our cardiovascular function and skin elasticity. With everything that the pandemic has taught us; it is more important than ever to make sure you have a strong, healthy immune system. Vitamin C can help with that!

With age your immune system naturally weakens, which makes seniors more vulnerable to catching colds and flus. More than half a century of research has shown vitamin C to be a crucial nutrient in various aspects of the immune system, particularly immune cell function. Vitamin C contributes to immune defense by supporting various cellular functions of both the innate and adaptive immune system, and when you do get sick Vitamin C may also speed up your recovery. All that from one little Vitamin?

Vitamin C has many benefits, below are just a few:

  1. Antioxidant: It helps protect your cells against the effects of free radicals

  2. Promotes healing: Vitamin C is vital to your body’s healing process

  3. Improves your immune response

Because your body doesn’t produce Vitamin C naturally, you need to get it from your diet. Below is a list of foods that are high in Vitamin C:

Citrus Fruits, Broccoli, Peppers, Cabbage, Tomatoes, Berries, Potatoes, and Spinach.

Our caregivers will use a few of the following recipes to ensure that your loved ones are getting enough Vitamin C in their daily diets when meal prepping for them.
